Eystrahorn Mountain: A Wild Peak on Iceland’s Eastern Edge

Eystrahorn, sometimes overshadowed by its famous neighbor Vestrahorn, is one of East Iceland’s most striking and remote mountains. Rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean along the Hvalnes Peninsula, Eystrahorn is composed primarily of gabbro, a dark, coarse volcanic rock rich in iron and magnesium.

This mountain is part of the trio known as the ‘Horny Mountains’—alongside Vestrahorn and Brunnhorn—named after their distinctive horn-like peaks. Eystrahorn’s jagged ridgeline and deep scree slopes make it an iconic geological formation that has drawn comparisons to dramatic fantasy landscapes.

Standing at the edge of the Lón region, Eystrahorn offers stunning views across the black sand coast, the turbulent North Atlantic, and the expansive lava fields that reach inland toward Vatnajökull Glacier.

Visiting Eystrahorn: Where Sea Meets Stone

Eystrahorn is located on the Hvalnes Peninsula, approximately 10 km northeast of Vestrahorn and the Stokksnes area. The easiest way to reach it is by driving along the Ring Road (Route 1). Look for the turnoff to the Hvalnes Nature Reserve, where you’ll find a lighthouse, dramatic cliffs, and views of the Atlantic crashing onto black sands.

This stretch of coastline is part of the broader Lón Nature Reserve, a wild and sparsely populated area known for its rich birdlife. In summer, it’s common to see Arctic terns, eider ducks, and puffins nesting in the area, while seals often rest on the shores or swim offshore.

The environment is raw and rugged—weather conditions change rapidly, and winds are frequent. There are no facilities nearby, so visitors should come prepared. That said, the seclusion and natural drama are exactly what make Eystrahorn such a memorable destination.

The Cultural Image of Eystrahorn: Iceland’s ‘Batman Mountain’

Though the nickname ‘Batman Mountain’ is more often applied to the neighboring Brunnhorn, Eystrahorn’s silhouette has also earned cinematic admiration. In fact, its dramatic form was considered by Christopher Nolan during the location scouting for Batman Begins. With its sharp ridges and shadowed peaks, the comparison to Gotham’s dark skyline isn’t far-fetched.

Eystrahorn also represents a geographic and emotional threshold. It stands at the edge of Iceland’s populated South Coast and the less-traveled Eastfjords, marking the transition between two different landscapes and experiences. Travelers heading east from Vík and Höfn find themselves crossing into quieter, wilder territory once they reach this point.

Today, Eystrahorn is treasured not just for its geological significance but as a symbol of Iceland’s untouched eastern edge—a place where silence, sea, and stone converge in perfect harmony.

The Locomotive Elite a book about corruption

The Locomotive Elite

What do Donald Trump and Iceland’s Locomotive Elite have in common?

Far more than you think.

In The Locomotive Elite, you’ll uncover how a tiny clique in Iceland captured extensive control—of banks, courts, media, and even the central bank.
For decades they ruled, first democratically, then through corruption and in the end through crime, enriching themselves and their cronies while dismantling oversight.
The result?
One of the most spectacular financial collapses in modern history.
